Kuay Tiew Noodles and More joins Somerville food scene as Thai go-to

For 17 years, Central Jerseyans have been heading to Origin Thai on Division Street for Thai-French fusion cuisine, but for those looking for Thai eats right from the ‘Land of Smiles,’ a new eatery has joined the foodie force that is Somerville.

Kuay Tiew Noodles and More was opened at 42 W. Main St., Somerville, next to the TD Bank, on Aug. 25 by Thana Sermsuwan and Chon Suthee, both of Raritan. The eatery is quickly gaining traction as the borough’s new go-to spot for tasty Thai noodles, soup and rice dishes.

“Nothing against Origin, but what we do here is a different concept,” said Sermsuwan, who moved from Bangkok, Thailand, to the United States in 1983. “Origin is Thai French so they use Thai herbs to cook French fusion dishes, but it’s not typical Thai. Our noodles and concept is as close to authentic Thai cuisine as possible.”

Kuay Tiew Noodles has certainly been a hit with locals — the eatery has garnered tons of five-star reviews on Yelp, Facebook and Google. Sermsuwan said that he only uses fresh and high-quality ingredients while also keeping reasonable prices with a menu ranging from $7 soups and appetizers to $15 rice specials. Plus, hesitant eaters don’t need to be afraid about getting hot under the collar — dishes have mild spice unless noted or requested otherwise.

The menu, which contains the same options and prices for lunch and dinner, is complemented by the rustic, industrial decor, utilizing reclaimed wood, pipe and tin to create a “cool and hip-looking interior,” Sermsuwan saod.

Sermsuwan, who helped open Origin Thai in 2000 and has expanded with locations in Basking Ridge, Somerville and Morristown, has always been passionate about cooking and food, which led him to get involved in the restaurant industry. While working at Origin Thai, he met Suthee, who moved from Thailand to the United States in 2007 and the two have been in a relationship for six years. Finally, they decided to open their own Thai restaurant together.

“A lot of customers, both younger and older, come to Kuay Tiew Noodles due to our price range and décor,” Sermsuwan said. “They say ‘Don’t change anything,’ that the food is so good and they love the dishes and the atmosphere.”
