Remember that time you said that this was the year you were going to get in shape, lose a few pounds and get cracking at the gym? Well guess what … it’s officially 2018 and it’s time to strap on your sneakers.

If drudging away on a treadmill has you wanting to head to the nearest Dunkin’ Donuts, no need to worry — there are tons of places in Central Jersey where you can get in a workout that won’t only burn off those holiday calories but will also be fun. Read on to find out where to get your 2018 New Year’s resolution on track, in the first installment of Central Jersey Go.

Studio Barre

Barre-based classes, which use a combination of postures inspired by ballet and other disciplines like yoga and Pilates, focus on isometric strength training (holding your body still while you contract a specific set of muscles) combined with high reps of small range-of-motion and sometimes, light handheld weights to help students burn fat and get toned.

Studio Barre Somerville, at 8 W Main St., applies a combination of arm, seat, thigh and ab exercises to define the long and lean muscles like that of a dancer in a musically driven, dance studio inspired environment.

The Gravity Vault

Rock climbing, which makes for a hefty full-body workout that utilizes both cardio and strength training, has picked up in popularity in recent years by those with a daredevil attitude, those looking for an off-the-beaten path workout and simply those who want to work out without battling the cold.

At The Gravity Vault, both beginner and advanced rock climbers can find 14,000-plus square feet of climbing, 40-plus-foot climbing walls, 45 to 60 top rope stations, cardio and strength training areas as well as bouldering stations.

Cost: Ranges from $18 adult one-day pass, to $65 monthly adult membership, to $20 staff-led walk-in climbing

Circus Place

They make it look so easy at the circus, right? However, silks, aerials, trapeze, balance, unicycle, juggling, hoops and more take strength and skills training, which can be developed at “circus schools,” which many students head to for a fun, recreational workout.

The Circus Place in Hillsborough, which offers about 50 weekly classes and is the largest circus school in the state, brings in about 250 students to a month to their classes, which utilize a combination of sport and performance.

Cost: Priced by the semester, which goes from Jan. 2 to March 26 with 12 classes, ranging from $295 to $395.
